The Western Australian Government has introduced the Public and Bank Holidays Amendment Bill 2025, proposing significant changes to the State’s public holiday calendar following an extensive consultation process. Aimed at ensuring Western Australia’s public holidays remain relevant, support economic activity and reflect the State’s cultural identity, the reforms would realign several holidays, introduce two new observances and bring the calendar closer to national arrangements. If passed, the changes will affect public holiday entitlements, rostering and payroll planning ahead of an anticipated commencement date in 2028.
Proposed Changes to the Public Holiday Schedule
Following feedback from community members, businesses, unions, peak industry bodies and government agencies, the Public and Bank Holidays Amendment Bill 2025 proposes the following updates:
- Labour Day to move to the second Monday in March instead of the first Monday in March. In most State Election years, Labour Day would shift to the third Monday in March to avoid elections being held on a long weekend
- WA Day to move to the second Monday in November instead of the first Monday in June
- The King’s Birthday public holiday to move to the second Monday in June instead of the current late September or early October date
- Easter Saturday to become a recognised public holiday, replacing the additional weekday holiday currently provided
- A new public holiday, Show Day, to be appointed by proclamation and aligned with the first Monday of the September or October school holidays
These changes would adjust the public holiday calendar to provide greater consistency and ensure celebrations take place at times more suited to the Western Australian community.
Timing of the Proposed Changes
To provide adequate preparation time for employers, employees and government agencies, the proposed amendments are not expected to take effect until 2028.
The Bill is expected to be considered and voted on by the Western Australian Parliament by the end of 2025. The anticipated two-year lead time is intended to support organisations in updating payroll processes, workforce planning, rostering arrangements and industrial instruments.
Further updates will be issued once the legislative process progresses and an outcome is confirmed.
