With the help of our Dubai based Payroll Specialist Anne-Mixy Joy, we take a look at what the job involves

The simple truth about payroll processing is that at the end of the day we are responsible for getting people paid - accurately and on time! And payday is undoubtably a significant event in all our calendars, so if something goes wrong, it’s fair to say that it can have a huge impact on our day to day lives.

As the cost-of-living crisis looms large in many countries across the globe, there are more and more people struggling to make it through from one pay day to the next. This means that the responsibility to get things right takes on an extra significance, knowing that the alternative could have major consequences for those waiting for their pay.

Our payroll professionals need to be able to calculate the numbers related to payroll, including pre-tax and post-tax deductions, taxes, and net pay, but also need to be empathetic. Understanding the human element of the payroll process is key because as we’ve noted the fallout from getting it wrong has a direct impact on people’s lives!

So, with the weight of all this on our shoulders why do we work in this industry? And who are the unsung heroes who work behind the scenes to make sure the wheels of payroll turn smoothly.

To help us find out a little bit more about the people and processes involved in getting us paid on time, we spoke to Payroll Specialist Anne-Mixy Joy from our Dubai office.

Hi Anne-Mixy can you start by telling us what a typical day looks like in the world of a payroll specialist?

Personally, I manage around 30 clients and I believe the key to be able to coordinate all the associated tasks is good time management and a proactive approach to payroll reporting and processing.

For us as payroll specialist everyday can be challenging since we are responsible for the end-to-end process of the payroll. This involves making sure that we deliver accurate calculations, that we meet payroll deadlines, and everyone is paid on time.

We are also involved with supporting clients and employees with their queries and offering them the appropriate level of support.

What do you enjoy most about your job?

The best thing about my job is that even when it’s challenging and I have to meet lots of payroll deadlines, I am surrounded by a very supportive manager and colleagues. It is this unfailing support that makes all the difference.

I do firmly believe that if you have a positive and supportive workplace it will have a huge impact on your ability to deliver good work and will help you succeed.

Are there any specific challenges you face on a regular basis?

As we are a global business with customers all across the world, one of the challenges we face every day is managing the time difference.

It is important that we take a flexible approach to customer experience to make sure that we offer the highest level of service to all our clients. Being able to build a good relationship with them is key so they will feel able to reach out to us at any time if they need support.

Would you recommend this job to others, and if so, why?

Yes absolutely, this is a fast paced and very rewarding environment to work in. In particular I love the work environment here at activpayroll where we are surrounded by supportive and friendly colleagues who are respectful to the different cultures.

Since working as a payroll specialist, I have learnt many new skills and would recommend the role, particularly at activpayroll, to anyone who likes a challenge and wants to feel part of a global family.

What three key skills does someone working in payroll need?

I’d say the three key skills you need are flexibility, good communication, and most especially passion.

Flexibility is needed so you can multitask and work well in a team environment. Good communication is extremely important as you will need to interact with your clients and colleagues around the globe. And thirdly passion for me is a must as the only way to do really great work is to love what you do.

Thank you for your time and your insights into payroll industry, Anne-Mixy.
