The CTO role at activpayroll is recognised as a business crucial role encompassing all of activpayroll’s global operations. As an international payroll outsourcing provider, we know and understand that technology is central to everything that we do and we need a strong candidate who will be able to lead the entire technology team through a programme of rapid expansion and development.

We’re hiring for this role now because to support our continual global growth we need to improve, develop and enhance our products and our entire technology ecosystem and we need someone who is able to understand what we’re trying to achieve and turn that into reality.

Our CTO will lead and develop a world class technology team to build and operate brilliant products and deliver services through a robust, efficient and secure technology environment, whilst working closely with operational leads in the execution of an innovative technology strategy.


Principal Duties

  • Responsible for the delivery and co-ordination of all Product Development activity utilising efficient and modern software development approaches
  • Responsible for the delivery of scalable, global Infrastructure including Data Centre, Public Cloud operations and Application Support
  • Supporting the Information Security Manager to ensure that compliance with ISO 27001 and all other relevant accreditations is maintained
  • Managing a team of 16 including Engineering, Product (Management and Design) and IT
  • Supporting the Channel Partner Manager with the scoping and delivery of technology integrations solutions
  • Supporting the Business Development Team with the assessment of prospect customer requirements and impact on product delivery
  • Analyse and select the right technology products, with the aim to reduce unnecessary complexity and cost

Service Excellence

  • Provide strategic leadership for the development and delivery of all technology platforms and teams
  • Proactively manage relationships with other Business Area Leads to encourage technology adoption

  • Knowledge and track record of managing and hiring high-performing teams
  • A clear understanding and strong opinion on how engineering teams should be structured and the ways of working that enable excellence in software delivery

Commercial Awareness

  • Strong commercial instincts, ideally having run your own business or been part of a founding team
  • Use your budget wisely to deliver the best possible value for the least possible cost, while delivery at high-speed
  • Maintaining insight to industry technology trends and developments that will benefit the delivery of the organisations services
  • Procure efficient and cost-effective technology equipment, services and software, while ensuring delivery of required functionality

Professional & Personal Development

  • Devise and implement development objectives for the IT team to ensure they hold the appropriate skills required to support technology adopted by the company
  • Ensure that actions from appraisal and ongoing business objectives are reviewed regularly with CEO


  • Experience in delivering and scaling SaaS-based applications in a security-conscious environment
  • A good grasp of product management and product design, with the ability to think clearly about how product and engineering work well together
  • Experience in creating and implementing world-class customer feedback and input as part of a robust product development process
  • Experience in the management and implementation of multiple integration platforms and technology partners
  • Experience in leading an engineering team focused on product development
  • Knowledge of modern application development technologies, principles and best practices
  • Excellent leadership, motivation and team development skills - across multiple teams & locations
  • Excellent knowledge of private cloud and SaaS infrastructure operations and networking
  • Excellent understanding of disaster recovery and business continuity
  • Excellent knowledge of ISO 27001 and SSAE18 / ISAE3402 is desirable
  • Highly organized with ability to prioritize workload to incorporate changing priorities
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to communicate clearly at all levels through reports, presentations and forming effective relationships
